The loss of such information can result in damage to the company and provide the competition with a competitive advantage. Loss of information not only has an economic consequence, it also results in a loss of reputation if made public.

Not only the direct competition is interested in confidential commercial information and details of future developments, increasingly government agencies of countries such as China and Russia seek to extract such information from companies in order to support the efforts of their own industries. Not only defence related companies are affected by this trend; any company which is a leader in its field is threatened by foreign intelligence agencies as much as they are by its direct commercial competitors.

Many companies believe they are protected as they spend a great deal of time and money on protecting their IT systems from external attacks. Additional physical measures such as CCTV and other forms of security checks further increase the feeling of data security. Non of these measures, however, protect the companies from rogue employees who pass on confidential information or those employees who, unwittingly, reveal commercial secrets to well trained and experienced agents. Such an attack on a company is known as social engineering, a proven method of extracting information from employees. Such attacks are on the increase as competition between companies and countries becomes more intensive. What is becoming apparent is that the weak link is not hard and software but the employees and this realisation is being exploited by those seeking to gain an advantage. IT security and physical measures remain as important as ever, they need however to be flanked by measures to combat the loss of information due to human failure.

The security of data is no longer a technical issue to be dealt with by the computer department, it has become a management and compliance issue. A company is obliged to protect its position in the market and senior management has a responsibility towards its owners and shareholders to undertake all efforts to ensure that all steps have been taken to ensure that crucial information remains confidential to the company.

ISPSW is able to help companies in meeting the challenge of protecting its information. Through audits based on ISO 27001 we are in a position to identify and evaluate the risks, monitor such risks as they develop, provide management with a strategy to combat loss of information and training courses to sensitise employees.

For further information contact ISPSW: + 49 (0)30 88 91 89 05 or e-mail: info@ispsw.de

See also: Worcester, Maxim: The Fight against Corruption, Industrial Espionage and Economic Crime
in: International Relations and Security Network (ISN), Center for Security Studies (CSS)
16 February 2010, ETH Zurich
http://www.css.ethz.ch/content/specialinterest/gess/cis/center-for-securities-studies/en/services/digital-library/publications/publication.html/112759

ISPSW organised a closed-door roundtable discussion hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore on March 9, 2020 in Berlin
Great Power Competition in Asia: Should Germany by worried?
Keynote speech by Mark Hauptmann MdB, Member of the German Bundestag
Geo-Economic Rivalry between the US and China- Europe’s Challenge – Dr. Josef Braml, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), Senior Research Fellow Foresight USA
China’s One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR) – Should Germany be Worried? – Arno Tappe, Bundeswehr Joint Forces Operational Command, Foreign Area Specialist to the Commander German Operational Command, Section Chief
Hotspot South China Sea – Should Germany be Worried? – Dr. Peter Roell, President, ISPSW
The Development in the South China Sea from an Economic Point of View – Christoph Brewka, Board Member of Company Group Klein/Berlin, CIO responsible for all Group Investments, also direct investments in the Asia-Pacific Region
The Importance of South East Asia in the Context of Great Power Competition in Asia – Should Germany be Worried? – Prof. Dr. Karl Pilny, Lawyer, Managing Director asia21gmbh, Zurich
Terrorism in South East Asia – Should Germany be Worried? – Dr. Hans-Jacob Schindler, Senior Director Counter Extremism Project
The Nuclear Crisis on The Korean Peninsula: Can the EU and Germany ignore it? – Dr. Hans Ulrich Seidt, Ambassador rtd.
East Asia’s Fragile Security Environment and the Propagation of Insecurity – Dr. Oliver Corff, Senior Consultant Asia-Pacific Region
The Strategic Importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and China’s One Belt, One Road Initiative (BRI) – Colonel (GS) Peter Haerle, Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS), Course Director
New Technologies – Mind The Gap – Ralph D.
